Reviews from People We Have Helped
Hasrul Mahmood
Retired civil servant, Petaling Jaya
After retiring from a government department, I received a pension summary that seemed lower than what I had expected based on my service record. Amanah Legal reviewed all the relevant documents and identified a discrepancy in how my pensionable service years had been calculated. The written summary they gave me was clear enough that I could follow it myself, and I did not feel rushed at any point. The matter was eventually resolved in my favour through correspondence — no hearing required.

The dispute representation took longer than I had initially hoped — but the team was upfront about that from the beginning. They told me at the start that the timeline would depend on how the other party responded, and they kept me updated at every stage without me having to ask. The correspondence they prepared was thorough, and the outcome was a revised payment arrangement I was satisfied with. I would have appreciated slightly more frequent updates in the middle stretch, but overall the service did what it set out to do.

My husband passed away before he could sort out the beneficiary arrangements on his pension. I came to Amanah Legal not knowing what to do or even what I was entitled to. They were patient with me, explained everything step by step, and brought my daughter in to join the meetings when I asked. The advisory service covered survivor entitlements in a way I could actually understand. I left each appointment knowing what the next step was.

Approaching retirement, Subang Jaya
I came in six months before my planned retirement date just to check that everything was in order. The entitlement review found a small issue with how my deferred salary period had been treated — something I never would have spotted on my own. At RM 160, it was money well spent. The summary I received was written in a way I could show to my HR department to support my query, which made the follow-up much easier.

I had received a letter from the pension authority reducing my monthly payment with no real explanation. I did not want to hire a lawyer for something that might come to nothing, so I started with the review service to understand the basis for the reduction first. It turned out there was a legitimate administrative reason, but the quantum was miscalculated. Amanah Legal helped me raise that specific point, and the payment was adjusted. Practical and straightforward.

What I valued most was that they did not make me feel like I should already know how any of this worked. I taught for 28 years and still found the pension paperwork confusing. The written summary they prepared was something I could actually read and refer back to. When I had follow-up questions two weeks later, they answered them without making it feel like an inconvenience.

A Closer Look at Three Matters
Case Study 01 — Pension Entitlement Review
The Challenge
A retired public servant received his first pension statement and found the monthly amount was approximately 15% lower than his rough calculations suggested. He was unsure whether the discrepancy was a computational error, a misapplication of scheme rules, or something he had misunderstood.
What We Did
We reviewed the pension authority's calculation against his service record and the applicable scheme rules. We identified that a period of secondment had been omitted from his pensionable service years. A written summary was prepared, and a formal letter submitted to the authority.
The Outcome
The authority acknowledged the omission within six weeks of the formal correspondence. The corrected pension amount was applied prospectively, and a small retrospective adjustment was also paid. Total timeline: approximately eight weeks from our initial review.

Case Study 02 — Dispute Representation
The Challenge
A client had her pension suspended following a dispute with her former employer over her departure terms. The pension authority had acted on information from the employer without seeking her account of events. She had been waiting over four months with no resolution and did not know how to proceed.
What We Did
We gathered relevant documentation, prepared a formal representation letter outlining the factual errors in the authority's record, and requested a review of the suspension decision. We managed all deadline-sensitive correspondence and kept the client informed of each step as it occurred.
The Outcome
The suspension was lifted after approximately eleven weeks. The authority accepted our client's account and restored the pension with back-payments for the period of suspension. No hearing was required in this instance.
"I did not have to chase anyone for updates. They managed everything." — L.W., Shah Alam
Case Study 03 — Retirement Benefits Advisory
The Challenge
Following the death of her husband — a civil servant who had not filed a beneficiary nomination before his passing — a widow was uncertain what she was entitled to from his pension, who to contact, and what documents she needed to gather. She had received conflicting information from two different government departments.
What We Did
Over the course of three meetings — with her daughter present throughout — we explained the default survivor entitlement provisions under the relevant public service pension rules, identified the correct authority to approach, and helped her compile the required documentation. We also prepared a covering letter on her behalf.
The Outcome
The survivor pension application was accepted. The client now receives a monthly survivor benefit she had not known she was entitled to. The process took approximately five months from first contact to first payment — largely within the authority's own processing timelines.
"I came in not knowing what to do. They were patient and never made me feel like I was asking too many questions." — N.A., Klang
